How Long Does a Gas Cylinder Last?
The question of how long does a gas cylinder last on its face seems very simple. However, estimating actual time is extremely complicated. There are scientific methods to do extensive calculations, but the math is simply far above the heads of many BBQ enthusiasts. There are some rules of thumb that can be used to help most of us stay in the ballpark when estimating how long the gas cylinders will last.
A good rule of thumb is one standard gas cylinder will last about 18-20 hours of cooking time. That is using the BBQ on medium heat on 2 to 3 burners. Larger burners and grills will use the gas much faster and may cut the time down to 10 hours of cook time.
How long your gas cylinder will last given the 18-20 hour estimate is still a highly variable answer. If you BBQ 2 times per week, and for about 30-40 minutes each usage, the cylinder should last about 6 weeks. Of course, if you grill every day, or you grill over an hour at a time, the cylinder will not last half that long. Gas cylinder life very much depends on personal usage.
There are a couple of good methods to estimate how long a gas cylinder will last. One way is to weigh the cylinder and get a tare weight when the cylinder is full. You can then weigh it and subtract the new weights from the original to see how much it goes down.
Another good method to keep track of how much gas is left in the cylinder is to get a cup of boiling water and slowly pour it down the side of the cylinder. After a few seconds, feel the side of the cylinder. You are looking for the spot where the metal goes from hot to cold. That spot will give you some idea how much gas is left in your cylinder.
